March/April 2026

Dr. Eden Woon

In March and April, Hong Kong is entering into its busiest
season, with an emphasis on the arts in March and on sports
and global business gatherings in April. Art, sports, geopolitical
and economic dialogue have all been covered by the e-
magazine, with this month’s issue being no exception. We
have a fascinating cover story on how the West Kowloon
Cultural District with its two world class museums and Art Park
have transformed the arts scene in Hong Kong, making the
“cultural desert” nickname no longer valid. We have another
story on the long-running annual Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Hong Kong is one of only two cities in the world outside
Switzerland to host the Art Basel exhibition, which is coming at
the end of this month. Watch our next issue for a writeup of
that globally prestigious event.

Sports, of course, is highlighted by the iconic Rugby Sevens in
April which attracts thousands of overseas visitors to the
tournament. It takes place in the main stadium of the Kai Tak
Sports Park, which has just been named by TIME as one of
“The World’s Greatest Places of 2026.” Since its opening one
year ago, it has also hosted many top entertainment billings to
overflowing local and visiting audiences, many coming from
Mainland China. The stadium has put Hong Kong on the world
map as a very attractive mega-event center in Asia.

On the conferences front, our member HSBC hosts its Global
Investment Summit, which is so big that it takes place in two
hotels simultaneously! A couple of other conferences on
Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance and fintech also take
place in April. Speaking of financial services, our CEO
Interview this month is with Aveline San, the CEO of Citi Hong
Kong, who will tell you about how their business is thriving in
Hong Kong, along with many firms in financial services, from
securities to investments to private banking.

And of course, AmCham Hong Kong just hosted its Women of
Influence Summit to celebrate March 8, International Women’s
Day, culminating in an awards gala – see the story in this
issue. Finally, on April 28, we present a terrific lineup of
experts and scholars and business leaders to talk about China,
in our annual China conference. With a visit by President
Donald Trump to China still up in the air, everyone is anxious to
see what is the latest in this volatile but very important
relationship. Our conference can offer some timely insights.
Hope to see you there!

It’s not only the US-China relationship which is volatile, the
whole world is unsettled these days. But as you can see from
the happenings above, and from the latest AmCham Business
Sentiment Survey, written up in this issue, despite Hong Kong
being in the vortex of an uncertain supply chain environment,
the city is still considered safe, proceeding steadily, and faring
well according to our members.
