Organized by the Hong Kong China Tennis Association (HKCTA), the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open (BOCHKTO) is an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ATP 250 event. The tournament is scheduled to take place at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium from December 29, 2024 to January 5, 2025.
Over 30 of today’s best tennis players in the world will be competing for a total prize purse worth US$660,000. Defending champion Andrey Rublev and Hong Kong, China team member Coleman Wong will join before the tour heads Down Under for the Australian Open.
“For the players it’s the perfect way to start the 2025 tennis season. This year, we welcome back our defending champion Andrey Rublev. He’ll be joined by a host of other global stars and of course our local hero Coleman Wong. Great tennis, great food, and entertainment. It’s the perfect way to open the new year and showcase Hong Kong on the global stage,” said Tournament Director Peter Johnston.
Andrey Rublev began this year with a victory in Hong Kong. Rublev ranked fifth in the world before his progression at the Australian Open was halted by eventual winner Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals. At the Masters 1000 event in Madrid, he beat Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz en route to the title. He then defeated world No. 1 Sinner to reach the final of the Masters 1000 in Montreal. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he won the gold medal in mixed doubles with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Currently ranked No. 7 in the world, he is aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the fifth consecutive year.
Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong was ranked No. 253 when he lost to Lorenzo Musetti at the ATP 250 on January 1, 2024. He has since qualified for his first Masters 1000 event in Miami and came within a whisker of reaching the Hangzhou Open quarterfinals when he held two match points against world No. 39 Brandon Nakashima in their round of sixteen clash. Wong subsequently achieved a career-high ATP No. 128, the highest ever recorded by a player from Hong Kong.
HKCTA President Michael Cheng, said: “The response we received from the 2024 tournament was tremendous and we are continuously aiming to do better. To be able to see so many great players up close and personal is definitely inspiring to our own players and the next generation of youngsters. We are bringing world-class tennis to Hong Kong, but at the same time, we are utilizing it as a platform to make tennis more accessible to all. We wish to engage people from all walks of life to foster a passion for the sport.”
Oscar Chow, Honorary Secretary of the HKCTA and Chairman of Hong Kong Tennis Open Steering Committee commented: “We are pleased to have enormous support from Bank of China Hong Kong, our title sponsor for the second consecutive year. The ATP 250 is the final leg of our inaugural Hong Kong Tennis Season, a dynamic platform to grow the Hong Kong brand and raise its international profile as a global events destination.”
The ATP 250 in Hong Kong has a rich history. Former champions include tennis greats Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Marcelo Rios, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Pat Cash, Jim Courier and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
At a historic meeting held in London on July 2, 1973, representatives from around Asia met with officials of the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) Calendar Committee, Commercial Union Assurance Company, and ATP to form the first Asian Tennis Circuit Committee of Management.
Ken Catton, who was Hong Kong’s representative at this meeting and president of the Hong Kong Lawn Tennis Association (HKLTA) President at the time, accepted an invitation to become the Executive Secretary for this new circuit.
The meeting agreed on a calendar of events with total prize money of US$200,000.
The Asian Swing, as it is now called, was thus formed with tour events starting in October 1973 at Osaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Manila, Tehran, Jakarta and Hong Kong.
Several finals stand out in this history. The title match in 1993 saw world No. 1 Pete Sampras defeat world No. 2 Jim Courier 6-3 6-7(1) 7-6(2) to collect a winner’s check worth US$39,600. In 1999, Andre Agassi came from a set down to beat Boris Becker 6-7(4) 6-4 6-4. Then, one last time in 2002 before the tournament took a 21-year hiatus, world No. 6 Juan Carlos Ferrero beat 10th-ranked Carlos Moya 6-3 1-6 7-6(4) to lift the coveted title.
The Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open is the third and final event featured in the Hong Kong Tennis Season, a platform that reflects that Hong Kong has become a premier hub for professional tennis.
The Hong Kong Tennis Season is a dynamic new tennis series featuring three prestigious international tennis tournaments and creating a new platform for elevating the visibility and prestige of Hong Kong on the international tennis landscape. It offers an exciting opportunity for HKCTA to stage a diverse range of international tennis tournaments, stimulate public interest in the game and provide a major boost to Hong Kong’s status as a leading sports, events and tourism destination.
The capacity to organize and showcase world-class tennis reinforces the city’s reputation as an events capital. These major sports events improve tourism, create new job opportunities, and give locals the chance to appreciate some of the world’s best tennis. Hong Kong has the distinction of being only one of three cities in Asia, including Beijing and Tokyo, to stage both ATP and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour events.
This season features:
- Prudential Hong Kong 125 (WTA 125) (September 30 to October 6, 2024)

The tournament generated media and public relations worth $126 million, attracted close to 1.4 million television viewers, registered in excess of 2,900 media clippings and more than 800 posts on social media platforms.
In addition to showcasing world-class men’s tennis, the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open 2025 will once again embrace a vibrant carnival-style theme, encouraging the entire Hong Kong community to get fully involved in the excitement.
Admission to qualifying matches from December 29 to 30, 2024 will be free.
